£750,000 Data Centre Investment

Remote hosting and management of IT systems is a growing business.

Leading Scottish business technology solutions provider Amor Group is investing £750,000 in the expansion of its data centre in Aberdeen, to meet fast growing demand for remotely hosted and managed IT services.

The announcement underlines the company’s expertise in the provision of managed services across a wide range of sectors including the global energy industry.

Work is now underway on the extension, which will more than double capacity at the data centre, already used by several major oil and gas operators and an integral part of Amor Group’s established disaster recovery service for businesses.

The facility is unique in the north of Scotland, but it can service clients from across the globe.

An increased number of businesses are now outsourcing their IT services to data centres because of the range of benefits - providing secure environments, support from highly skilled IT professionals and freeing up time to concentrate on core business activity, as well as removing pressure on office space and being more environmentally friendly.

Dave Bruce, Amor Group’s Managed Services Director, said the investment in the data centre was in direct response to growing demand for remotely managed IT services.

“Major disruptions to businesses, particularly IT-related disruptions, cost the UK economy billions of pounds every year and are considered to be the number one threat to businesses, so the concept of managed data centres and hosting has become one of our fastest growing areas,” he said.

“Using a third party to host off-site is much more environmentally friendly, as well as freeing up valuable office space.

“The cost of remotely hosted and managed facilities also mean substantial savings for customers compared to commissioning their own facilities and providing hardware, particularly for smaller or start-up businesses which can obtain access to much bigger infrastructures and IT applications.

“Crucially, we are able to provide almost 100% availability, which means far less downtime and less disruption to businesses – which is particularly relevant for the oil and gas industry.”

Amor Group’s Managed Services division, which includes IT operational support and information management, also offers business continuity services including disaster and workplace recovery.

Dave added: “Our data centre also offers business continuity in the event of a major disaster such as fire or flood at a client’s business premises. This can be the difference between the business surviving or failing in the wake of a significant incident.”

Polly Purvis, Executive Director of ScotlandIS, the trade body for the country’s information and communications technologies (ICT) industry, added: “We're delighted that Amor Group is investing in additional facilities at its data centre.

“Increasing demand for first class data centre facilities will continue to grow over the next few years, and through this expansion, Amor Group is helping Scotland to establish itself as a highly competitive location for modern, efficient and environmentally responsible data centres. Amor Group's investment underpins new approaches to the way businesses think about ICT provision, as well as providing an enhanced service to both new and existing clients.”

Construction work on the data centre, which is based in Altens, Aberdeen, is expected to be completed by the summer and will have no impact on the service provided to current clients.
